The Gallery - Keith Oviatt (27 items)

At his home in Pittsfield, PA, Keith Oviatt enjoys tending his vegetable garden, fruit trees, and blueberry patch, but most of all he enjoys working with his home-grown wood. At first, woodworking was the means to an end. Owning a home presented many opportunities to hone his woodworking skills. Keith cut some black cherry trees from his backyard and had them sawn into boards. Those boards would later be planed down and used to panel a wall in the family room. Not wanting to waste any of the beautifully grained wood, he also planed the scrap slabs and began making small treasures with the scroll saw and gave them to family and friends. Each intricate cut requires a hole to be drilled and the delicate saw blade threaded through. Keith uses ¼ inch thick cherry so each piece is done individually rather than stacking in order to cut multiples at one time.
Keith is an active Shriner. In 2002, he made 15 angels hoping to make a few bucks for the Shriner’s hospital. Not only did he sell those, but he came home with 20 more orders. The project was so successful that he does a different angel every year raising thousands of dollars. He is known as the ‘Angel Man’ among his Shriner friends.
Keith is now a member of the Local Artists Co-Op/ Allegheny Artistry in Youngsville, and his work has taken an even more creative turn. He loves the grain of natural wood. If he adds color, it is a watercolor wash which allows the grain to show. In addition to his delicate ornaments, he does pictures, shadow boxes, and free-standing pieces. All are sawn from native wood—cherry, walnut, maple, catalpa, and butternut. Prices range from $3.50 to $150.
